I listened to the first instalment of Radio 4’s Book of the week: Tom Fort’s ‘Channel Shore’. I was interested enough to find out more. I searched on line and found a disparaging review in the Independent. I searched on Amazon and then went into my local branch of Waterstones to take a peek at the book.’ Channel Shore’ sat next to ‘A303: Highway to the Sun’ ( also a mildly interesting TV show as I remember ). I knew then what the reviewer was driving at (pun intended - I think). Using roads and shorelines as organising concepts are interesting ideas but the name dropping, run of the mill photographs and uninspiring presentation in the book (by the publisher?) mean although I will keep listening, and keep a look out for other Tom Fort publications, I will not be buying the ‘Channel Shore’ (unless I find it available at substantially less than £14.99).
